An Exceptional Edition of the Norberto Goizueta Memorial at Guadalmina

From 17 to 19 July 2026, the South Course at the Real Club de Golf Guadalmina hosted a new edition of the Norberto Goizueta Memorial, one of the most important and distinctive events on our Club’s sporting calendar.

Over three days, Guadalmina welcomed an outstanding field, including players with Handicap Indexes of +5.5. The entry cut-off for visiting players was set at 5.2, reflecting the exceptional standard of a tournament counting towards the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).

Beyond its undoubted sporting significance, this year’s edition once again highlighted an essential aspect of the Memorial: it is one of the Real Club de Golf Guadalmina’s own competitions, closely linked to the Club’s history, identity and Members.

As a Club competition, the Tournament Committee, comprising Ms Patricia Jiménez, Ms María Murillo and Mr Alfredo Calle, gave priority to our Members, ensuring that every Member who entered was able to take part, irrespective of the demanding entry cut-off established for visiting players.

This decision enabled our Members to share the course and compete alongside some of today’s leading amateur golfers.

Three Days of Demanding Competition

The Norberto Goizueta Memorial was played over 54 holes in the Medal Play (Scratch) format, across three consecutive days on the South Course. The Ladies played from the 55 tee markers and the Men from the 61 tee markers.

The cut was made after the second round, with the top half of the field in each of the two categories —Ladies and Men— progressing to the final round.

The demands of the course, the quality of the field and the closeness of the leading scores ensured that the outcome remained in doubt until the closing holes on Sunday.

Following the second round, several of our Members and Golf Academy players remained firmly in contention for the leading positions.

In the Ladies’ category, Julia Gelma, Noa Terroba, Yaiza Morales and Blanca Gómez-Balboa entered the decisive round with scores ranging from level par to four over par.

In the Men’s category, Aitor Macías reached the final round with an outstanding eight-under-par total, just two strokes behind the leader. Our senior Member George Trowbridge was also among the top ten in the Mid-Amateur standings after the opening two rounds.

 

Guadalmina to the Fore in the Final Standings

The final round confirmed the excellent performances seen throughout the tournament.

Julia Gelma Labarga produced a superb closing round of 68 to become the Ladies’ Scratch Champion, finishing with a 54-hole total of 212 strokes, four under par. Julia also topped the Ladies’ Handicap standings.

Aitor Macías López delivered another outstanding performance, finishing runner-up in the Men’s Scratch competition after rounds of 69, 67 and 67 for a total of 203 strokes, thirteen under par. Aitor also secured second place in the Men’s Handicap standings.

Further notable performances came from Blanca Gómez-Balboa, who finished fifth in both the Ladies’ Scratch and Handicap competitions; Inés Izuzquiza Ruiz de Arana, runner-up in the Ladies’ Handicap standings; and Noa Terroba, who finished seventh in the Scratch standings and tenth in the Handicap standings.

The strong showing of Julia Gelma, Noa Terroba, Yaiza Morales and Aitor Macías, all players from our Golf Academy, provides an excellent illustration of the talent that continues to develop at Guadalmina. Alongside them, other Members also produced performances of considerable merit in exceptionally strong fields.

The South Course at Its Best

The Real Club de Golf Guadalmina Greenkeeping Team did an outstanding job in preparing the South Course, whose condition and presentation drew widespread praise from the players throughout the three days of competition.

The meticulous attention to detail, the work carried out over the preceding weeks and the constant care provided throughout the tournament were instrumental in ensuring that the course was presented at its very best.

The Club would like to congratulate and thank the entire Greenkeeping Team for their exceptional commitment and hard work.

Collaboration and Professionalism Behind the Event

The Real Club de Golf Guadalmina would like to thank the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation for its continued support and its readiness to provide valuable technical assistance whenever required in the organisation of the Memorial.

This year, that support included the provision of the Tournament Director, the refereeing team and several of the trophies presented to the winners.

The Club would particularly like to acknowledge the professionalism and dedication of Mr Francisco Contreras Casas, Chief Referee, together with Mr Eugenio Alises Ripoll, Mr Jesús Ruiloba Calzada and Mr José Manuel Martínez Domínguez, whose work ensured that the competition ran smoothly and with the rigour expected of an event of this calibre.

The prize-giving ceremony was presided over by Mr Tim Waller, Chairman of the Competition Committee and a member of the Board of Directors of the Real Club de Golf Guadalmina, attending on behalf of the Club President.

He was joined by Ms Patricia Jiménez, Chair of the Women’s Amateur Technical Committee of the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation; Mr Francisco Contreras Casas, Chief Referee; and Mr Ignacio del Cuvillo, General Manager of the Real Club de Golf Guadalmina.

The Norberto Goizueta Memorial once again brought together golfers of different generations in a competition deeply rooted in Guadalmina’s history and identity.
