Essential Facts: What is the Ryder Cup 2025?
Venue, course and characteristics
The 45th edition of the Ryder Cup will be played at the Bethpage Black Course, Bethpage State Park, Farmingdale, New York (Long Island).
An iconic public course, it is renowned for its toughness, its demanding bunkers, and the challenging atmosphere it creates for players.
In 2025, it will be set up as a par-70 (some sources indicate par-71; configurations may vary), stretching around 7,300–7,400 yards depending on the tournament setup.
The design of Bethpage Black requires precision: fast greens, deep bunkers, thick rough, and narrow fairways across many holes.
Teams, captains and format
Captains and vice-captains
-
Europe: Led by Captain Luke Donald, who continues after Europe’s victory in 2023.
-
Vice-captains: Thomas Bjørn, Alex Norén, José María Olazábal, Edoardo Molinari and Francesco Molinari.
-
-
United States: Led by Captain Keegan Bradley (appointed on 8 July 2024).
-

-
Key players / teams
-
Europe brings back 11 of the 12 champions from Rome 2023, providing both continuity and experience.
Among them: Rory McIlroy (8th Ryder Cup), Justin Rose (7th), Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Shane Lowry, Matt Fitzpatrick, Robert MacIntyre, Ludvig Åberg, Rasmus Højgaard and Sepp Straka. -
United States features top names such as World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Bryson DeChambeau and others.
-
Notably, for the first time, U.S. players will receive an additional payment for their participation, sparking debate about the philosophy of this historic competition.
Format and points
The Ryder Cup is contested over three days, with foursomes (alternate shot) in the mornings and fourballs in the afternoons for the first two days, followed by singles matches on Sunday.
A total of 28 points are at stake. Europe needs 14 points to retain the Cup in the event of a tie, while the U.S. requires 14.5 to claim it.
Historical record
The U.S. leads in overall victories, but Europe has been dominant in recent decades.
In the 21st century, Europe has won or retained the Cup in 8 of the last 11 editions.
However, winning on American soil is far more difficult: Europe’s last victory away from home was the legendary “Miracle at Medinah” in 2012 (video).
